Trusted Advisers are Critical to Precision Success
Nearly two-thirds of farmers who are early adopters of technology rely on a trusted adviser to help collect and interpret data. In addition, more than 8 in 10 have a specific person from the farm operation tasked with precision technology evaluation and adoption.
The more acres a farmer controls, the more likely they are to use a consultant or retail service provider – 63% of those with more than 2,500 acres are working with a trusted adviser.

Data Utility Still a Challenge
Only one in four farmers said they have a system to store and analyze year over year agronomic data.
About one-third of farmers use data to adjust their cropping plans in real time based on information from imagery, sensors, in-field testing and scouting, and traps, as well as some third-party data services.

Age is Not Necessarily a Key Indicator of Technology Adoption
When it comes to innovation, it’s the younger, tech-savvy farmers that are taking the lead. Right? Not so fast.

Lack of Broadband Hampers Innovation
A lack of highly consistent, quality broadband connectivity is more than an annoyance – it’s a technology innovation killer.
Global AgTech Alliance research conducted in 2019 found that more than half of farmers rate their broadband service as average or not functional. The research also shows larger farm operations (2,500+ acres) are more satisfied with the broadband and cell services they receive, and are most likely to have on-farm wi-fi.
Overall, while availability of cell service for phone calls and texts is nearly universal, only 19% of farmers are completely satisfied with their service for these relatively simple system demands. This declines as more demands are made on the service, such as:
- accessing the internet (15%)
- downloading data from field to computer(13%)
- streaming video (13%)
